More than 400 manufacturing employees will lose their jobs at Avon Products in Springdale, Ohio, as the company moves ahead with its planned closure of local manufacturing operations.

Avon (NYSE: AVP) announced last July it could close its campus in Springdale, located about 10 miles south of West Chester. The site includes manufacturing, a returned goods processing operation and customer service call center, and employed about 940 at the time of last year’s announcement.

In a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filing with the state of Ohio, the company said it expected to begin closing the manufacturing operation this December. Work will be transferred to manufacturing sites in Morton Grove, Ill.; Celaya, Mexico; a facility in China; and a contract manufacturer in New Jersey.

Layoffs will continue through the second quarter of 2012, according to the filing. Employees are not represented by a union.

Avon has been working since last year to find a buyer for its facility in Springdale. If a deal is completed, spokeswoman Jennifer Vargas said about 350 call center and returns processing employees could remain onsite.

“It is possible that a call center and also returns employees may stay in Springdale once the building is sold as tenants to a new owner,” Vargas said.

She declined to say whether the company had found a potential buyer.
